Terry Waller, Inclusion advisor, Becta
Terry has been with Becta since its inception in 1998 and before that worked for the National Council for Educational Technology in the area of inclusion and special educational needs. He has led on national projects, developed networks of support and expertise and published a range of materials on how ICT can improve access to education for pupils with disabilities and learning difficulties. He was involved in the piloting and setting up of Senco-forum, one of the first school sector inclusion communities of practice, and in the development of the inclusion website [ http://inclusion.ngfl.gov.uk ] which provides a catalogue of resources and advice on SEN and Inclusion.
Becta's current remit is to directly support government in the leadership and coordination of the e-strategy, and as part of that, all of Becta's work - and that of its partners - needs to contribute towards embedding the concept of supporting all learners. Terry is part of the SEN and inclusion team whose work across the organisation is to ensure that its activities and outcomes are inclusive.
Title: Inclusion and e-learning: the challenge
Technology continues to be a paradox for learners and teachers. On the one hand providing new and increasingly powerful opportunities for communication and independence and on the other seemly barriers to engagement and autonomy. The government's e-strategy aspires to transform education through the appropriate use of technology for the benefit of all learners, particularly those who are hard to reach. Becta's role in coordinating the efforts of all involved in this agenda. This presentation will highlight some of the current activities of Becta and the implications for learners with disabilities and learning difficulties.
